Write HHS to remove ORR Director.

#Dailyrevolution

Today’s #DailyRevolution is to stand up for women’s and immigrants’ rights by writing to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), calling for the removal of Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) Director Scott Lloyd. Last week the ACLU revealed documents that show Scott Lloyd and 45’s administration were trying to force two more young immigrant women (“Jane Roe” and “Jane Poe”) to stay pregnant against their will - one of whom was pregnant as a result of rape.

Like many of 45’s cabinet and cabinet-level appointees, such as Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, who are inexperienced, ignorant, and ethically dubious, Scott Lloyd is similarly ill-fitted for the job. Appointed in March, Lloyd has made headlines in recent months for trying to block unaccompanied immigrant minors from getting abortions. In one of the documents released, which was previously sealed, Lloyd expressed he does not believe abortion should be a “solution” to a rape: “In fact, some would suggest that, by declining to assist in the abortion we are in some way engaging in a form of violence against the mother, as in the notion that ORR is forcing her to carry her pregnancy to term. I disagree.”

These cases are the latest in a systematic attempt to control women’s reproductive rights — as set forth in a new (unconstitutional) policy established in March by 45’s administration banning all abortions at the ORR. In October the ACLU represented another young immigrant woman, “Jane Doe,” who Lloyd tried to block from having an abortion; “Jane Doe” won in court and had an abortion. Court documents have revealed that Lloyd has been known to personally contact these young women to persuade them not to have an abortion. They also show the ORR requires pregnant teens to have a sonogram, as well as to go to a religiously affiliated, anti-abortion “Crisis Pregnancy Center” for counseling.

Who is Scott Lloyd anyway? With a background as an attorney at the Knights of Columbus (a Catholic fraternal organization) and deep involvement with several anti-abortion organizations, Lloyd is a religious radical on an anti-abortion crusade. He has argued pregnant women should be legally required to obtain consent of their partners before getting an abortion, and that contraception is ineffective (dismissing science like others in 45’s administration). In short: Lloyd has a long career campaigning against abortion, not focusing on refugee resettlement.

Today’s #DailyRevolution is to protest Lloyd’s unconstitutional overreach and abuse of power by sending a letter to HHS demanding his removal. Use our script below.

Acting Secretary Don Wright

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services

Hubert H. Humphrey Building

200 Independence Avenue

S.W., Washington, D.C. 20201.

Dear Acting Secretary Don Wright,

I'm writing to express grave concern over ORR Director Scott Lloyd. Not only is he unfit for office (having little experience presiding over refugee resettlement), but he has abused his power in establishing and implementing an unconstitutional policy at the ORR that bans unaccompanied immigrant minors from getting abortions. He has no right to control or interfere with any woman’s personal health care decisions — regardless of documentation status. Please remove Scott Lloyd immediately from his position as director of ORR.

Sincerely,

[Name]

[City, State of Residence]

If you want to do more, take a stand for all the Janes by supporting this ACLU petition asking Scott Lloyd to stop blocking young immigrant women from safe and legal abortion care.
