Call on Congress to create a better budget.

Recess is over. Congress is back in D.C., and there are only four days left before a possible government shutdown on Friday. Today’s #DailyRevolution is to use our ANYR shortcut number (202-858-2697) to call on Congress to ignore 45 and pass a clean budget, without add-ons (or ‘riders’) that build a wall, defund Planned Parenthood, or target programs that serve undocumented immigrants in sanctuary cities.

On Sunday we learned how the budget process should work. House and Senate appropriations committees come together to create a final funding bill that allocates federal dollars in line with what our federal priorities are: funding research into climate change and medical innovation, ensuring access to health care and education, and providing support for the communities that need it. The President signs that bill before the end of the fiscal year and by October 1, a new budget is in place and the government hums along smoothly, with no risk of a shutdown.

Unfortunately it hasn’t happened like that in years. Instead, unable to come together on a spending agreement, lawmakers punt the problem, passing short-term budget bills, or ‘continuing resolutions,’ (CRs) that maintain current spending levels and give them more time to come up with the real deal.

Last December, Congress passed one of these CRs to fund federal government agencies through April 28. They now have until Friday at midnight to pass a full spending bill that will fund the government through September 30, the end of fiscal year 2017 (or punt again with another short-term CR).

But with 45 desperate to not look like a complete failure in his first 100 days, Congressional Republicans are under increased pressure to tack on riders to fund 45’s $1.4 billion wall, and take care of some more of his campaign “promises,” including defunding Planned Parenthood, and targeting sanctuary cities that seek to protect undocumented immigrant residents. It’s looking less and less likely that the various sides will come to an agreement this week, but we’re not going to leave things up to chance.

Today, call your members of Congress and tell them to ignore 45’s demands, and pass a clean budget to prevent a government shutdown. (Previous government shutdowns have ended up costing billions of dollars.)

Use ANYR’s shortcut to connect directly to your members of Congress: 202-858-ANYR (202-858-2697).

Enter your zip code and our new service will identify your senators and representatives and connect you directly to their D.C. offices. You won’t get a busy signal or have to keep calling back. The call system does the work so you can multitask until you’re connected.

** Please be courteous, and if you have to leave a message, be sure to leave your city/state/zip code to be tallied! The quicker you get your calls in, the more opportunities there are for other callers to get through.**
