Call Your Ossoff: 5 days til Georgia’s special election
Next week Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District will hold a special House election to replace Republican Congressman Tom Price, who left his seat to join 45’s administration. Democratic nominee Jon Ossoff has a good chance of flipping a seat in the House. Today’s #DailyRevolution is to join a Swing Left call party and ‘Call your Ossoff!’ to get out the vote in Georgia.
Georgia’s first go was in April’s special election in which all 18 candidates ran on one ballot. Although Jon Ossoff received 48.1% of the vote — and the next closest Republican candidate received less than 20% —because no one person took 50% of the vote, a runoff election was scheduled for June 20th.
This has quickly become the most expensive House race in history with Ossoff raising more than 23 million dollars for his campaign. His Republican opponent Karen Handel isn’t doing too badly either, pulling in more than $750K in one night, thanks to a special visit from 45. Unfortunately, polls show Ossoff holding only a slight lead over Handel, 50-47, and with only six days before the election, this is too close for comfort (and definitely too close to sit home on our osses!).
Republicans are fighting hard on their end, for fear that a loss may prompt a Democratic uprising and a streak of retirements by lawmakers who might be reluctant to run in a difficult midterm. We need to fight harder. Let’s show the GOP that the political fire the 2016 election started in our hearts (and under our osses) is still burning strong. Let’s get calling and get Georgia to the polls!
