Fight for your right to birth control.
Today is the 52nd anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut, the landmark decision of the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) that first established the right to privacy, ensuring women’s access to contraception across the the country. Today’s #DailyRevolution is to call our members of Congress and tell them that everyone deserves access to birth control, and we will not sit quietly by while this basic benefit is rolled back.
In 1965, this pivotal decision gave the right to contraception only to *cough* married women (because only married women use contraception, right?!). Even so, it set a strong precedent for subsequent SCOTUS decisions that ensured women's right to access contraception AND abortion for decades after.
Now, our right to basic preventive women's healthcare is under serious attack. Currently, (thanks to Obamacare) all health insurance plans must cover contraception without co-pay. Since this contraception benefit was enacted in 2012, 55 million women have gained coverage.
Last week, yet another leak out of this White House suggested that 45 is planning to roll back the guaranteed coverage of contraception in all health plans. This means if you or someone you know currently gets contraception under their insurance plan, it could go away at any moment. Maybe tomorrow, or maybe few weeks from now; access to birth control is hanging by a thread.
We need to act now. Call your members of Congress and tell them that if they want your support in the next election, they’d better be willing to fight for your access to this critical and basic health service.
Call our shortcut number to contact your members: 202-858-ANYR (2697). Enter your zip code and our service will identify your representatives and connect you directly to their D.C. offices. You won’t get a busy signal, or have to keep calling back.
** Please be courteous, and if you have to leave a message, be sure to leave your city/state/zip code to be tallied! The quicker you get your calls in, the more opportunities there are for other callers to get through.**
