New York Cares: Help kick-off coat drive season.
No matter what political climate we are in, the harsh winter months bring extra hardship to members of our communities who cannot afford necessities like a coat to keep warm, safe and healthy. Today’s #DailyRevolution is to help New York Cares kick off their 29th annual Coat Drive.
Last year 109,000 coats were donated to an all-time high number of New Yorkers in need of warm outerwear through the New York Cares Coat Drive. Today, New York Cares begins their coat drive for 2017, which will run through December 31st.
Here are a few ways you can get involved:
1. Host a coat drive at your place of work, apartment building, school or community center. It’s pretty simple: If you don’t see a prominently marked box for a coat drive, ask around. If there are no coat drive plans in the works, offer to start one! Register your coat drive here. There are resources available to help get you started, such as this Coat Drive poster download.
2. Donate by texting COAT to 41444. $20 is enough to buy a new coat for a neighbor in need.
3. Get the word out on social media. Post about the New York Cares Coat Drive using #CoatDrive and encourage your network to donate or start their own drive.
4. Donate a coat: Use the drop-off location map to look up donation points nearby.
As soon as the donation season begins, New York Cares works with partners across New York City, acting fast to sort and distribute the coats to those in need within the city’s most vulnerable populations.
Note: Donated coats must be gently used and freshly laundered or new. The coats in highest demand are children’s coats and men’s coats size XL.
