NY’ers: Rally + call for modern voting laws
It’s easy to assume that those of us who live in New York are in an unpoppable liberal bubble, but the fact is that the state has a lot of catching up to do, especially around voting reform. New York state voter laws haven’t been updated since 1890, and some glaring omissions have developed over the last 127 years. Easy Elections NY is a coalition of grassroots groups striving to pass progressive New York State voting rights laws before June 21, so they can go into effect in time for the 2018 elections. Today’s #DailyRevolution is to make plans to join tomorrow’s Albany Day of Action by signing up to attend (free buses from NYC and Westchester), spreading the word on social media about the rally with #EasyElectionsNY and calling your state representatives with our script below to tell them to pass New York’s voter reform laws now.
New York hasn’t voted for a Republican president since Ronald Reagan in 1984, but an alarming 36.5% of voters in New York chose 45 to be their president. That’s almost 3 million people of the state’s 57% turnout in the 2016 election. This low turnout made the state the 41st in turnout. In order to step it up for the 2018 election, we must pass voter reform laws ASAP to make it easier for more New Yorkers to participate. This is not only vital for New Yorkers, but the rest of the country, as our outdated laws are often used as an excuse for voter suppression in other states.
Easy Elections NY is focusing on five key reforms: Early Voting, Automatic Voter Registration, Electronic Poll Books, the fact that you have to change your party registration six months before a primary, and that parolees can’t vote. Two bills, Early Voting (S.2950) and Electronic Poll Books (S.2788) have both passed the state Assembly, but are hung up in the Senate Rules Committee. Now we need to get our state senators to pay attention and let them know that their constituents demand a floor vote.
Show up to tomorrow’s Albany rally in person, and if you can’t make it, use our scripts below to call your local representatives!
