Women’s Health Week: Support the Global HER Act.
In celebration of Women’s Health Week, we are calling on the Senate today to ensure women’s access to evidence-based health care, and to oppose any legislation that reduces access. Today’s #DailyRevolution is to call your senators to demand they stand up for women’s access to ALL health services, both at home and abroad.
“As we celebrate Women’s Health Week, beginning with Mother’s Day, we recognize the importance of providing women access to the best, evidence-based health information and care.” - The President of the United States
Believe it or not, 45 said that this weekend, and frankly, we call bulls#!*!
Back on January 23rd, one of the first actions of the Trump administration was to reinstate and expand the Global Gag Rule, a rule targeting abortion access around the world and threatening women’s access to basic services like maternity care, preventive STI screenings, and HIV testing and treatment — and that was just Week One. Since 45 came into office, there has been an all-out attack on women’s access to health care. His administration has:
Expanded of the Global Gag Rule, doubling down on a rule that reduces women’s access to care around the world, whether or not they are seeking abortions.
Launched targeted attacks on Planned Parenthood providers, risking women’s access to federal funding for family planning.
Pushed for health reform legislation (a.k.a. Trumpcare), which would cut millions of low-income women and families from Medicaid, allow insurance companies to strip maternity coverage from basic insurance plans, and charge more for survivors of domestic and sexual assault.
On the same day that 45 released the Women’s Health Week statement, the White House also released their guidelines for the implementation of the Global Gag Rule, finally showing how terrible and broad the impact will be: they’re actually increasing funds by up to $9 billion for groups that actively oppose abortion and provide healthcare that is far from evidence-based.
Fortunately, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) has a bill — S. 210, the Global Health, Empowerment and Rights (HER) Act — that would reverse the effects of 45’s executive order.
Today’s action is to call the Senate to express your support for women's FULL access to reproductive health care — at home and around the world. This script has two parts:
Tell your Senator to oppose ANY health reform proposals that reduce women's access to health care, including contraception; AND
Thank them for supporting Senator Shaheen's Global HER Act OR ask them to cosponsor this bill.
Check out our graphic below to see if your senators have cosponsored this bill.
